Emerald Star

About Us

We're the boatdogs Luna and Tiki. This is us watching the sunrise at Three River Reach in the Delta. Tiki is on the left and Luna on the right.

Our Business

We let our people know when anyone comes near the boat. We also usually require daily shore excursions so that the people don't spend all their time on the boat.

Additional Business

Since EVERYBODY asks......Do we go to the bathroom on the boat?  Where do we go??

Tiki is a true boatdog - she learned long ago, a chunk of steak helped bribe her the first time, to just go on the deck near the anchor locker at the bow. Even when we're at a dock she'll go if she thinks a walk won't be anytime real soon. When you gotta go, ya gotta go. However out on the ocean she generally won't go if the swell is more than about 5 feet - so far. We'll see on a longer passage.

Luna was really uptight about this whole subject for a long time. Like "Eeew, yuck! I can't believe Tiki just did that." Then we did the 24 hour trip from Santa Cruz to Morro Bay. As soon as we entered the harbor mouth and the swell went away, Luna trotted up to the bow and took care of business. So she's learning.

Expertise

Luna: VP of Security

Notifies the people of all nearby pelicans, big fish, dolphins, people, dinghies, etc. Requires pets/scratches from any people nearby. Notifies the VP of Electrical Engineering that there is a reason to bark in an obnoxious manner.

Tiki: VP of Electrical Engineering

Creates soldering projects for Ray when it appears he needs something to do. If the people leave us dogs on board, alone, for several hours then VHF, SSB and computer cables might be severed. This is a random occurrence. Statistically it is more likely to occur if we can hear our people on another boat laughing, talking, etc.

Who We Are

Luna and Tiki - Boatdogs.

We are both rescue/shelter dogs of unknown genetic background and unknown ages. Some say we are Canine Goofycus.

Tiki is about 4 years old and is probably Australian Shepard and Schipperke. Tiki was adopted first and was almost a year old then.

Luna is definitely a mix of Schipperke and some large water loving dog and is probably around 6 to 8 years old. When the search for a second dog started we looked for a Schipperke mix and found her on  www.Petfinder.com

By the way-Schipperkes were bred to be the watch dogs on the barges in Europe. So they make great boat dogs. Schipperke means "little skipper" in Flemish.

Oh, and then there are the people who adopted us, run the boat, buy the dog food, etc. That's Diane and Ray.
