Emerald Star

Cabo San Lucas

The day we arrived in Cabo, and also the following day, they were filming a movie in the anchorage area so we had to move (re-anchor) the boat 4 times in 24 hours so that the helicopter could do those cool, sweeping photo shoots of an uninhabited beach and water. Guys on Jetskis were going to each boat and having them move out of certain areas. There were dozens of boats that had to move several times since apparently no one could be sure of where we should be other than the film director. The boats were very packed together during the photo shoots then we could spread out after filming was done for the day.  When it was all over they announced on the radio that they’d thank the Ha-Ha fleet in the movie credits. After the movie filming was done we were finally able to get to shore and have some fun.

The beach at Cabo....so close, but yet so far away......

We missed a couple of Ha-Ha events because of the movie shoot. We did make it, late, to the beach party at Mango’s restaurant and we attended the final event, the awards ceremony. There were awards for each of several divisions, worst boat injury (dislocated shoulder), youngest kid (16 months), oldest sailor (82), sailing naked (only three contestants on that one), best imitation of a fellow crew members snoring, most unnecessary radio chatter, woman skipper who sailed the furthest, and a few other things. Each division has someone come in first, someone second and everyone else is in third place. Much to our surprise we won our division! Not due to extremely fast sailing, but we were the only boat in our division that sailed the whole first leg. Everyone else motored at least part of each leg. But we were in the “Desperado” division of 16 boats. Desperado seems to be the heavy, full keel, blue water sailing division (in other words, slow and stable). If you sail the whole way in this division you’ll probably miss most of the social events. So we now have a blue ribbon and Ray has a new lime green Ha-Ha shirt that designates that he’s the captain of the boat that won a division.

Tiki with "Lands End" in the background. It is the southern tip of the Baja pennisula. and a famous beach. We went there for an afternoon-Beautiful!!

We stayed a week or so in Cabo to catch up on laundry, mail, etc. Also, we wanted to be tourists, since this is a major tourist spot. Then we headed, slowly, north to La Paz in the Sea of Cortez (also known as the Gulf of California) on the east side of Baja.

Finally some photos...
