Emerald Star

Loreto to Santa Rosalia

San Juanico. The water was very clear which made for great snorkeling and swimming.

We had great views while hiking at San Juanico.

Tiki had sooo much to keep track of on the hike to Ramada cove.

Sunrise at Playa Santa Barbara in Bahia Conception

The palapas at El Burro cove in Bahia Conception. It was "off season" so most of them were boarded up for the summer. Most people arrive in October and leave in May when it gets hot and humid. There is no electricity here except for some palapas have a solar panel or two. So there's no air conditioning. Besides you can't really air condition a thatched roof building. At high tide the water goes right up to the front porches of the houses. They are pretty neat and usually have some interesting "architectural" features and/or very cool decorations.

There were hundreds, probably thousands, of brown pelicans in the bay. There were soooo many pelicans that Luna and Tiki even gave up barking at them after a few days. What a relief!

El Burro Cove from the trail on the hill.

There are several petroglyphs on the rocks above El Burro.

Ancient petroglyphs. Stingrays probably.

Modern petroglyphs. As you can see, the quality of the artwork has declined significantly over the years.

The plaza in Santa Rosalia.

Santa Rosalia was constructed in the late 1800's by a French copper mining company. All of the original buildings were built of wood imported from the west coast of the US. The older buildings have a real "wild west" look to them. This is the Hotel Francaise where we had a great breakfast one day.

The famous Eiffel Church. It was originally built in Europe then disassembled and shipped to Santa Rosalia a few years later.

We went to San Juanico for 5 nights, a beautiful, remote spot. We hope to spend more time there on the way back south. Then we headed to Bahia Conception for over a week and went to four anchorages there. On the way to Santa Rosalia we spent one night anchored off of Isla San Marcos, but the surf was big enough where we didn't go to shore. Then we were in Santa Rosalia for almost a week.
